Mission Brief
Here's your mission: today your team opens its own comic book studio.
Your job is to create a real 6-panel comic, from first idea to finished pages, and read it to your family tonight. You invent the hero, the problem, and the ending. No copying a story you already know.
Here's how to run it:
1. Brainstorm. Set a 10-minute timer. Write down every hero idea you can think of, even the silly ones. Circle your favorite together.
2. Build the story. Decide three things: who your hero is, what goes wrong, and how they fix it. That's your beginning, middle, and end.
3. Divide the work. Quester 1 maps out what happens in each of the 6 panels. Quester 2 sketches the panels in pencil, then adds color.
4. Make the cover. Give your comic a title and a cover that makes people want to open it.
5. Present it. Tonight, read your comic out loud to the family. Take questions like real authors.
Check in with your adult before using scissors or the stapler. Everything else is yours to figure out.
Story Captain: Quester 1
Leads the brainstorm, writes the story, and decides what happens in each of the 6 panels.
Art Director: Quester 2
Sketches every panel in pencil, adds the color, and designs the cover. Owns how the comic looks.
Parent Check-In Script
"That looks like real teamwork. Walk me through your comic. Which panel are you most proud of? What was the hardest part to agree on together? If you made the next issue tomorrow, what would happen next?"
Every mission card in your Quest includes its own check-in script. Keep it to 5 or 10 minutes: ask questions, don't fix things.
What You'll Need
Plain paper or a small notebook
Pencils and erasers
Markers, crayons, or colored pencils
Ruler for panel lines
Scissors and stapler (check in with your adult first)
End-of-Day Reflection
What part of the comic turned out better because you worked as a team?
What would you tell another kid making their first comic?
If your hero were real, what would they say about how you two worked today?
Parent Notes
Resist the urge to steer the story. A weird plot they invented beats a tidy one you suggested. If they stall, ask 'What would your hero do on the worst day ever?' and step back. The presentation matters as much as the comic: let them hold the room tonight.
